Seven art galleries. Seven woman owners. Seven simultaneous shows. And many, many talented women artists from across India. `Paint and Perspectives’, presented by The Hindu as part of its larger event `WOW’, to mark the centenary of International Women’s Day, is a unique offering of art. From March 7 to 13, seven art galleries in the city, all owned by women of substance – many artists in their own right – will simultaneously showcase the works of women artists, both well-known names and emerging talents, from various corners of the country.

The works span different themes, styles and media, but what they have in common is the shared celebration of artistic expression and womanhood. Making it even more meaningful is the fact that a part of the proceeds from the show will go towards an NGO working for women’s causes. Here’s what Ms.Chitra Ragulan has to say about this unique undertaking:

Studio Palazzo an Art Gallery began showing works of young artists from 2002. Maldives, Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Hyderabad are some of the places where the gallery has exhibited. There have been exhibitions earlier, of women artists from Austria, Netherlands,France, USA and Sweden as well as Iran.

I am a member of the Zonta Club of Madras, a club of women professionals who try to advance the status of women worldwide through advocacy and service; holding the post of the Area I Director for our district consisting of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. The club works closely with local NGO’s and women’s organizations to help women/children. Award/scholarship programmes are also helping students at undergraduate, graduate and post graduate level to fulfill their dreams of higher study/rsearch.

The two artists I have chosen for this show are Kiran Kumari and Komal Parmar. Their work is a very strong statement of their observation. Contrasting styles, yet they portray women as individuals, as real people with feelings and emotions. They are women who walk on this earth, elemental, passionate, burdened, long suffering yet cheerful, resilient, hopeful and powerful.

Kiran Kumari has this to say about herself:
I am a self taught artist.
Painting is a passion from childhood
Born in Tirupathi.
Studied MA communication & journalism.
Worked more than15 years with Development journalism and activism.
Designed posters, illustrations and cover pages on women issues and dalit issues to Government and non Government organizations.

Working with rural poor women which enriched me philosophically and spiritually.
At present I am working as a fulltime artist having a studio in Tirupathi.
Working on portraits and cityscapes with different medium.
I love to do portraits and try to capture the inner self of the person.

Komal Parmar:
Has completed her BFA from the JJ School of Art Mumbai in 2003 and learnt Photography as well.
Has trained under Nirmala Patwardhan in Pune in pottery.
Works in acrylics and oils in her own style.
Her artwork reflects an interest in expressing herself through colour.
Komal’s paintings are expressionistic with a palette of bright colours that absorb and compliment what she paints on canvas.
Her paintings have a freshness and spontaneity to them which are an extension of her personality.
She uses strong composition with bold colours, interpreting what she sees around her.
