Studio Palazzo Art Gallery, Chennai

Studio Palazzo, an Art Gallery in Chennai, was started in Dec 2001 by Chitra Ragulan.

Studio Palazzo has held more than 40 art exhibitions, in both India and abroad. Whilst the gallery started by showcasing young artists of South India, it gradually moved towards exhibiting the works of artists from other states. The art gallery has not only exhibited artists from other states in Chennai but also went to other states to exhibit the works in other gallery spaces.

In 2009, artist Paritosh Pal’s works were exhibited in Chennai, Chitraka Parishad in Bangalore, and at the Cymroza Art Gallery in Mumbai. A group exhibition of young artists ‘Self & Identity’ was shown at the India Habitat Centre, Delhi and at the National Gallery in Maldives.

Of the exhibitions held in Chennai a group show ‘Five Women’ had among the artists, Chantal Gowa (a French artist from Auroville), Pamela Winfield (US), Ruth Labak (Austria) and Elizabeth Bente (Denmark). In July 2010, Nahal Fekri Ershad from Tehran, a fashion Designer and artist had a very successful show at the gallery.

January 2011: Paintings of three artists – Paritosh Pal, Sanjay Ashtaputre and K. Balu are being showcased at the Inorbit Mall (Madhapur) Hyderabad.

April 2011: A ‘Retrospective’ of London-based artist, Kanwal Dhaliwal, is slated at the Artists’ Centre, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, wherein the artist explores the pain of the Partition and the Diaspora of the Indian immigrant in the United Kingdom.

Chitra Ragulan - Director of Palazzo Art Gallery

“Just as writing expresses a comment on society, so also a visual artist expresses in his art a representation of the society we live in. All forms of art are outward expressions of an inward process, whether they be music, dance, sculpture or painting. An artist is an observer of society.

One thing I am completely sure of is that all art forms are beyond borders. Artists need to expand their horizons by interacting with other artists in India and outside India in both performing art and visual art.

Studio Palazzo has exhibited work by artists from UK, USA, France, Sweden, Iran. In 2011 I hope to hold exhibitions of artists from the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Korea.

South East Asia and the Middle East are the focus of world attention in art. A confident, strong and growing economy has brought about tremendous changes in the way we look at art and culture the world over”
